Manchester United players on Tuesday, 21st December returned to training after last week’s Covid-19 outbreak in the first-team squad.

Covid-19 cases forced their two English Premier League matches against Brentford and Brighton to be postponed.

The Premier League board took the decision to call the fixtures off, based on guidance from medical advisors.

“Manchester United’s players have started a return to training at Carrington on a staggered basis. The complex was closed for first-team operations last week due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club but opened again (on Tuesday) morning,” the club said in a statement.

“Hence, this will now give interim manager Ralf Rangnick and his squad time to prepare for our next fixture — the Premier League meeting with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Monday, 27th December.”

According to media reports, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Fred were among the players that showed up for training.

The Premier League announced on Monday, 20th December that it would continue with its schedule despite widespread coronavirus outbreaks, which forced the postponement of six league matches last weekend.

The English top flight reported 90 new coronavirus cases among players and staff last week — a big leap from 42 in the previous week.

United are currently sixth in the Premier League table having played 16 matches.

After meeting with Newcastle next Monday United are also scheduled to face Burnley on Thursday, 30th December.
