Media personality Mandi Sarro has personally apologised to Gitobu Koome, her former workmate, over bullying allegations.

Mandi confirmed that she worked with Gitobu at, now inoperative radio station, 1 FM in 2013. The station was closed down in 2019.

Former 1 FM presenter Gitobu Koome.

Gitobu alleged that Mandi was terrorising her because he lacked a proper accent as he was affected by his parent language. He confessed that Mandi used to remind him of his weakness whenever he happened to cross her.

However, Mandi says that she tried recounting all the bullying experiences shared online by her previous workmates and could not recall all of them.

“I have taken the time to think deeply and reflect about those incidents to understand the entire situation… In all honesty, I do not recall the many experiences recounted online, but that does not negate that those moments could have impacted those I have worked and interacted with negatively.”

“I can see how those experiences contribute to the overall ‘mean girl’ culture that is perceived to be part of the media industry here in Kenya. I do not wish to contribute to that culture, and I mean that sincerely,” she added.

Mandi further avowed that she works daily on improving the way she handles people at workplaces and also to accept the results when called out because of behaviours that impact others negatively.

“As I grow older, I have ensured to continuously correct my behaviour at the earliest opportunity and learn from my past mistakes and interactions. Although this entire conversation has taken a life of its own, I still see this as another opportunity for self-improvement, and I do not intend to waste it,” she wrote.

“I’ve been on a journey of self-improvement for the past decade, and the path is going to continue. We are all more than our worst moments. I will continue to work to be the best version of myself. The world needs more kindness and love, and I want to continue to contribute to it.”

She says that the incidents outlined by her workmates are just a reflection of what is happening in the majority of workspaces, and she will now advocate for a friendly workspace for Kenyans that allow their growth in all aspects of life.

“With my own experiences as an employee in the past and as an employer now myself, I cannot underestimate how important it is to create safe workspaces for all I come into contact with.”

“So I pray and hope that anyone who may have been hurt by previous colleagues will find new ways to address those conflicts which allow them to be genuinely resolved,” the YouTuber advocated.
