A renowned national school, Maranda High School, has closed its gates again.
This follows after a section of students threatened to raze down one of their dormitories.
The school administration on December 1, 2021, was forced to release over 400 students, among them culprits in form four, who had attempted arson ahead of mock examinations set for December 6th.
Speaking to a local radio station, a teacher noted that the students had refused to sit for the examinations and had taken to the walls of toilets to express their opprobrium over the exams.
Responding to the protestation by the students, Siaya County Director of Education, Nelson Sifuna, confirmed that the mock exams had been canceled to curb the unrest.
The impromptu closure comes barely a month after the students reported back to the school after being sent home ensuing fire incident at one of their dorms that housed over 200 students on November 7.
Following a surge in cases of school arson, Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof. George Magoha, had issued a stern warning to students found guilty of the crime stating that they will not be accepted to learn in any institution countrywide after being expelled from their respective schools.
He supported this directive pointing out that it will aid in minimizing arson cases in schools. He asserted that schools will continue to run normally despite the rise of indiscipline cases.
“It looks mundane and juvenile to burn a building. It is stupid, it’s primitive, and must stop. We are not closing any schools,” stated the CS.
