Learners at Maranda High School have been ordered to go for a compulsory drug test before reporting to school on January 3, 2022.

This decision was reached after a meeting by the school administration, on December 23, as part of programs to determine why there was a rise in the indiscipline cases at the educational facility that led to the razing down of its structures late this year.

Going by the text messages sent to parents, the students must undergo the drug tests at approved public facilities or the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drugs and Alcohol abuse (NACADA) before reporting day.

“All the students to undergo a mandatory drug and substance test while at home. This must be done in a public health facility or NACADA,” the message read in part.

The school further stated that the students should submit their certificates on the same day they will be reporting and forewarned individuals who will try to present altered certificates, affirming that they will conduct random tests to prove the results.

“Subsequently, there shall be a random testing conducted in and by the school,” the message read in part.

Additionally, the students will only be allowed in the school premises after paying Ksh5,125 for the damages caused to the dorm that was torched on December 5.

Parents are also expected to clear fees before the re-admission process.

The school shortlisted culprits who are suspected to have taken part in the arson, and they are expected to be the first cohort to report on 8 am on the re-opening date.

This was the second fire incident reported at Maranda, as the students were also sent home on November 8, 2021, after a fire razed down a dormitory occupied by 200 students.
