The dusk to dawn curfew imposed last month by the government has been extended for 30 days.
In a gazette notice, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the curfew between 6 pm to 6 am takes effect from 1st June 2022 and shall remain in force for 30 days.
A month later, the CS said the region classified as a disturbed area is still under serious threat posed to security.
Consequently, any movement to and from the area within that period must be cleared by security officials.
“Under this Order, there shall be no public gatherings, processions or movement, either alone or as a group during the period of the curfew except as has been permitted in writing by the Inspector[1]General of the National Police Service” the order read.
Last the month the CS declared a month-long curfew and operation in the volatile North Eastern county to enhance a disarmament exercise over insecurity.
Matiang’i who had visited the area following incessant attacks accused political leaders in the county of fueling the tension in the Northern Kenya region.
Speaking after a meeting with senior security officials at the GSU headquarters in Ruaraka, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said there is a nexus between the proliferation of illegal ammunition in the county and mining activities in neighbouring Isiolo County, especially in Kom in Merti sub-county.
So far 140 firearms and over 1,000 bullets of illicit weapons have been recovered since Operation Rejesha Amani Marsabit started on the 2nd of May.
The National Police Service has been holding forums to sensitize residents to voluntarily surrender arms with emphasis that the operation is not meant to target any community but to fish out criminals in the entire county.
