Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has been the talk of the town in recent weeks ahead of the much-touted National Delegates Conference (NDC) of his party on Sunday, January 23.
Mudavadi has emerged as one of the most desired brides in the coming presidential election.
Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, the perceived State House frontrunners, have been keeping tabs with the former Finance Minister in efforts to win him to their sides.
According to Mudavadi, his declaration on Sunday will alter the country’s political landscape in ways no one has imagined.
In his words, he equates his impending announcement to an earthquake or tsunami. Of course, this has resulted in fun on social media networks, as most Kenyans believe he will either align himself with Raila or Ruto’s camps.
But there are new speculations that in some way could have a seismic impact on Kenya’s political scene.
Three days to the ANC convention, Litkenya.com understands that Mudavadi and Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua, popularly known as the iron lady, could be cooking something.
A source intimated that the ANC boss may unveil the former Gichugu MP as his presidential running mate. In his latest posters, Mudavadi has been indicating that he will use the event to launch his presidential ambition.
Third Force
A combination between Mudavadi and Karua is not one to ignore and could emerge as the real third force to take on Raila and Ruto for the top seat. The dithering One Kenya Alliance (OKA) where is Mudavadi is a co-principal has also been mentioned as a third force.
In all probability, the duo could offer an alternative to Kenyans who are still undecided. Recent opinion polls have shown that there is a significant constituency that prefers neither Ruto nor Raila.
Mudavadi boosts of having propped the country’s economy when he was Finance minister during the Moi era while Karua is social justice crusader.
While they may not catch up with Ruto and Raila, the two could be spoilers and deny any of the main challengers the 50 plus one of the total votes cast as required by the Constitution, setting in motion a run-off.
Karua is likely to eat into the DP perceived Mt Kenya stronghold while Mudavadi could split the Luyha vote, crushing blow to Raila’s State House bid.
This means they will have an upper hand in negotiating a deal with either Raila or Ruto and on their own terms.
Should Mudavadi and Karua close ranks, however, the question of whether they have the financial muscle to sell their bid and stand a chance will emerge.
Also, critics are likely to revive the few scandals they have been roped in.
