Martin Wambora Retains Council of Governors Chairman Post

Embu County Governor Martin Wambora has retained his seat as Chairman of the Council of Governors.

Wambora was re-elected on Thursday, 27th January following a consensus in a council meeting at a Nairobi hotel. All the 47 governors were present.

His Kisii counterpart James Ongwae will continue to serve as his vice-chair. Elgeyo-Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos also retained the council’s Whip position.

Speaking after his re-election governor Wambora said: “I am greatly humbled by the trust and confidence bestowed on me by my fellow brothers and sisters. I am honored to provide leadership and direction for yet another term,” he started

The first COG Chairman was former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto who was succeeded by former Meru Governor Peter Munya in 2015.

In 2017 Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok was elected as the third chairman who handed the leadership button to Kakamega Governor Oparanya.

Governor Wambora took over as COG Chairman in January 2021 from Governor Oparanya.

The CoG is a non-partisan organisation established under Section 19 of the Intergovernmental Relations Act (IGRA 2012).

Its main functions are the promotion of visionary leadership, sharing of best practices and; offer a collective voice on policy issues, promote inter-county consultations, encourage and initiate information sharing on the performance of county governments with regard to the execution of their functions and collective consultation on matters of interest to county governments.
