Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has announced the revocation of all licenses of all motor vehicle and motorcycle dealers operating in Kenya.
The CS stated that the move is aimed at polishing and digitalizing the sector, and the dealers will have to undergo a rigorous process before they get the new digital license.
Matiang’i further said that the existing KG red number plates must be ceded to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for a replacement with green number plates by April 1, 2022.

Currently, in Kenya, the red KG number plates are possessed by container freight stations, garages, and towing services but the new shift will see them get green KC, KG, and KT plates respectively.
The initial K stands for Kenya, while C is for containers, G for garages, and T for towing services companies.
“The Inter-Agency Team has recommended a digital register of all motor vehicle dealerships in the country and the replacement of the red Kenya Garage (KG) plates with KC (Container Freight Stations), and KT (Kenya Towing) and green KG plates,” the statement read in part.
The new number plates will have white letters and numbers inscribed on a light green background similar to that used initially by municipal councils.
Matiang’i was with NTSA during the launch of the new number plates and noted that the enlisting of motor vehicles by the Registrar of Motor vehicles is an important activity to its owners as they will be provided with relevant certificates. He added that the activity also has an impact on the security and economy of the country.
The cost of replacing the red KG number plate costs Ksh18,850. The application is done on the eCitizen website.
