Formula 1 executives have confirmed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen as the winner of the much-contested Abu Dhabi GP ahead of Lewis Hamilton sponsored by Mercedes.

This announcement comes after Mercedes launched a complaint disputing the move to crown Max as the 2021 world champion instead of Hamilton, who they alleged that he had won the controversial race.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Red Bull expressed their disappointments after the appeal, clinging to the decision by Formula 1 that Max had emerged the best and beat the mastery Hamilton who had high stakes that he would win the title.

“It’s disappointing we had to go through that,” Red Bull boss Christian Horner told Sky Sports News.

“It’s been an amazing year, I’m proud of Max and the whole team. He’s the world champion and the deserving world champion.”

“Relieved,” said Verstappen. “It’s been a very stressful day.”

Mercedes registered two protests following a title decider in the last lap that saw Max outdistance Hamilton in a restart procedure from F1 race director Michael Masi and another alleging that Verstappen overtook Hamilton under the Safety Car.

The stewards took 3 hours to deliberate on the protests based on Article 48.12 and Article 48.8 of the F1 Sporting Regulations.

The Safety Car rule in Formula 1 stipulates that, during the final lap, the backmarkers in the race are forced to un-lap themselves to allow the finalists to race effectively. Also, the backmarkers are barred from overtaking the finalists. These rules ensure that there are no obstructions during the final lap of the race.

Mercedes have been issued 96 hours to launch their official appeal for further contemplation.

Coincidentally, that timeframe takes them up to Thursday night when Verstappen is due to be crowned champion at the FIA Awards Ceremony.
