Nairobi county government, in conjunction with the Nairobi Metropolitan Services, has renamed Mbagathi way to Raila Odinga Way.
The road signage bearing the name of ODM’s party leader Raila Odinga was have erected on Thursday night 4th November. The brief event was led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i.
The move comes after the Nairobi county assembly on Tuesday, 4th October passed a motion, sponsored by Minority whip Peter Imwatok, approving the renaming of Mbagathi Way to Raila Odinga Way.
Speaking during the debate, the Makongeni MCA said that Raila deserved the honour after fighting the country’s democratic and economic development.
“He fought for greater democratic space, good governance, rule of law and development of infrastructure, including detention without trial for 10 years,” said Imwatok.
He said deserving leaders should be recognised while they are alive, not when they die.
“Let’s appreciate them when they look at us on our faces and reflect back with satisfaction that indeed they did what was unfashionable then for the good of our present and future, while they are still alive and with us,” Imwatok said.
Mbagathi Way is the fourth road to be renamed this year. In March, Eastleigh First Avenue lane was renamed Mohammed Yusuf Haji Avenue in honour of the Garissa Senator who died in February.
Kapiti Crescent Road in South B was renamed in honour of football legend Joe Kadenge while Accra Road in the CBD was renamed after former Ford Asili party leader Kenneth Matiba.
In May, Nairobi Deputy Governor Ann Kananu renamed Dik Dik road in Kileleshwa after the Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary-General Francis Atwoli.
