Members of the Akorino sect are often viewed as the holy of the holiest among Christians.
However, Bishop Isaac Nduati Mwangi’s habits are far from everything you’ve ever heard or believed about Akorino.
Perhaps he is the only bishop who will walk into a bar in broad daylight, ask for his favourite drink and enjoy it without being concerned about what people will say.
Mwangi says he started taking alcohol from an early age.
“My grandfather used to make the traditional booze and would share some with me because I’m named after him. Since then, I’ve taking alcohol and I don’t think I’m stopping anytime soon,” he said.
The man of the cloth said during an Interview on the WM YouTube channel that he was ordained as a pastor and bishop while still an alcoholic.
He remarked that his spiritual fathers were impressed by his teachings and the ability to attract many followers, thus they did not focus much on the negative side.
“When it comes to spreading the gospel, I am a very serious person. I’ve started numerous church branches in Nyeri, Murang’a, and Nairobi from the scratch and now they have huge followings,” he said.
He later established his own denomination, which has several branches in different parts of the country.
“The biggest challenge has been running my church because sometimes on Sundays I’m drunk and able to join the members I recruited.”
The preacher explained that he has tried many times to quit alcohol, but in vain, adding that there is nothing he can do.
“I believe that one day God will deliver me from this addiction without going for rehabilitation. For now, I will continue enjoying my drink without being ashamed. After all, God searches the heart while alcohol affects the liver,” Mwangi said.
Asked why he has never removed the turban, the bishop said “I have tried, but when I take off the headwear, I become blind and very sick.”
He disclosed that every day he takes at least six bottles of beer and during the weekends he can even drink down a whole crate.
“I get my money by performing Mugithi songs in clubs. I’m able to feed and give my wife and children a good life,” he said.
