Having graced international fashion shows, 26-year-old Luca Wakarindi, the fashionista behind Kahush’s look, opens up on how she met him and her experience with celebs.

Q: How would you describe yourself in three words?

A: I like to describe myself as a visionary, entrepreneurial and overall someone who has a good heart.

Q: What inspired you to start in fashion?

A: It goes back to when I left school, and at the time, I did not know exactly what to do {laughs}. But I have always had a knack for fashion so I decided to try it out. It has so far helped me to express myself, penetrate in almost every industry, so yeah, it seems like I made the right choice to join the industry.

Q: What’s that one fashion trend that you do not understand or dislike?

A: I don’t think there is a fashion trend that I do not understand or dislike. I am here for it all.

Q: You’ve been invited to the Met Gala, and the theme is Camp. What would you wear to the red carpet and who would dress you?

A: Okay, I do not know exactly what I’d wear but I do know that I would have Muyishime dress me. He does over the top designs, and that’s ideally what Camp really means to me.

Q: Kahush is now a household name in the music industry. How did the two of you meet, and what’s his style like?

A: Kahush and I actually met on set. I did not know him prior to our meet up on set. His style is almost similar to mine. He’s very open but more into the retro style of dressing.

Q: Have you worked with other celebrities in the past? If so, what and how was your experience?

A: I have worked with celebrities in the past. I did not have the best experience compared to working with Kahush. I’ll admit that it is a bit hard to be a female in the industry. The expectation is that when you work with a celebrity, they are going to promote you and use their voice for you, but that’s not the case. When they don’t do that, they are not helping you, so that was pretty much the experience that I had.

Q: Which celebrity (both locally and internationally) would you love to work in the future, and why?

A: I have always wanted to work with Rihanna internationally, and locally I’d say Xeniah Manasseh. I love Xeniah, and I’m impressed by the steps she’s making in her journey, and I would definitely want to be a part of it. Rihanna is my all-time favourite, and I feel like she and I have the same style, and we are both very experimental. I get the feeling that she would be very easy to work with.

Q: What is the most expensive purchase in your wardrobe?

A: {Laughs}… A pair of black boots that my best friend got me. I rarely buy expensive outfits or clothes because I know where to get them at an affordable price.

Q: On an off day, Luca will be spotted in….

A: Most probably a wanzi or sweatpants.

Q: Favourite place to shop besides your thrift shop is….

A: Nairobi is my go to place to shop in. I love shopping from the vendors in the city because they are pretty much everywhere and always have amazing and dope stuff.
