Members of Parliament – MPs demand forensic audit on alleged COVID-19 fraud

Members of Parliament -MPs are demanding the Auditor General to investigate and present an audit report on the use of COVID-19 funds to parliament within 60 days.

The public accounts committee directing the auditor general to probe events at the health ministry called for prosecution of those found culpable.

The National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said those found to have profiteered from the shady deals should face the law irrespective of their position.

The legislators are accusing a few people in government of attempting to hoodwink Kenyans.

The speaker challenged investigative bodies to be proactive and not wait to be prompted by parliament to probe claims of graft.

Muturi said parliament is mandated to request for special audits even as he pointed out those found culpable will be held to account.

This comes as a section of MP’s are alleged to have benefited from the funds.

The senate accounts committee has warned governors  against hiding crucial documents during audit queries.

The committee probing Busia Governor Sospeter Ojamong was forced to adjourn severally after crucial evidence relating to county use of funds  from 2016 was missing.

During the sitting the governor was required to explain claims of misuse of county funds in accelerated county developments funds, millions of shilling unaccounted for in unsurrendered imprests  as well as unaccounted funds in the county’s financial budget.
