– Messi was thoroughly critical of his team’s performances this season
– The Argentine forward scored a freekick on Thursday as his side lost 2-1 to Osasuna, effectively relinquishing the La Liga title
– The 32-year-old warned his side against such performances if they are to proceed further in the Champions League
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi did not hold back in his fierce criticism against his side after a lowly defeat to Osasuna confirmed an end to their La Liga title reign.
The Catalan giants succumbed to their sixth defeat of the season on Thursday night with Messi typically leaving mouths agape with a stunning free kick but it was not enough to salvage their season.
“We were a very erratic, very weak, low-intensity team…We lost a lot of points and today’s game is a summary of the season,” he started.
In a quite unnerving post match interview with Movistar + the six-time Ballon d’Or winner was adamant his team’s performances this season were almost not good enough for the Champions League.
“We have to be self-critical. Starting with the players but doing a global self-criticism. We are Barca and we have to win everything. We can’t look at Madrid…Madrid have done their job, but we have helped them a lot. If we want to win the Champions League, we have to change a lot. If we continue like this, we will lose the game against Napoli,” Messi went on.
Notably, Barcelona led the standings for a large chunk of the season, with wheels seemingly starting to fall off for Quique Setien’s side after the el Classico.
Barca’s only shot at redemption this season is in the Champions League, where they also face an uphill task in overcoming a resurgent Napoli side.
If they proceed to the quarter finals, Messi’s side will have to overcome Bayern Munich.
