Rest in peace Abeny Jachiga. Abeny was a celebrity. His burial was handled poorly. The government should have anticipated the number of people who were likely to turn up. Since his death was not COVID related, his fans should have had a few days to come to terms with his death. Some standards should have been set in respect of his burial.

The drama should have been avoided. I feel for his loved ones who could not witness his send off.Beyond that though, I want to state categorically that Luos being expressive is not new. They are expressive by nature and in all facets of life. That is why Roho churches dance on the streets to praise God. They are expressive in love.

They will call you “Baby”, open the door of the car or matatu for their ladies, remember important dates like when he first bought you mandas. They will call in the night to tell you how your face looks like the moon shining through the leaves in his garden ( even if he has no garden). They will spoil their lovers like crazy. They are also generous in love ( so you are likely to be at least 5 loved in the same manner.

They love life and will live large. A Luo must have DSTV even in a mud walled house. They adore their musicians and celebrate them. They dance like there is no tomorrow. The Luos can pass an exam on musicians from Musa Juma to Abeny Jachiga than they will pass an exam on COVID prevention.

Luos are expressive in politics. That is why MDVD and team are trying to fill the shoes but it is hollow. We don’t feel them. They are not expressive. They are expressive in academia. Luos are by nature also expressive in death.

They trully celebrate loved and even hated ones. Some of these things mentioned are beginning to change slowly by the very circumstances of life. Burials are more muted now since too many people die. Keeping up the pace is difficult.

Men may want to love 5 women but the economy dictates 1 or 2. Christian standards also change some of the ways of life. Some of these will change with time by the very nature of life. But until then, I too celebrate Luos and refuse to take the approach demeaning Luos for just being who they are: expressive!!
