Hard work, grit, ambition, and discipline. These are the words, to sum up, the life of 50-year-old Margaret Ong’ayo.

Hers is an inspiring story of a young girl who left the village after her marriage failed. She settled down at 17 years and got her firstborn.

Just like any other Kenyan, she arrived in the city and started looking for a job to sustain herself and that of her child, whom she had left in the village with her grandmother.

Through the help of relatives, she was employed as a house help, a job she now prides in, and take it as a career.

She told This Is Me show on Kirathi Gia Carol Kinyugo Mwaura YouTube channel that she worked in different homes before an agency that enrolled her for a short course.

“After the training, I became a professional domestic worker. The agency helped me secure a job whose terms and conditions were better,” she said.

However, her life changed completely with the whites. The mother of three detailed these employers have been kind, considerate, and above all, giving her decent pay.

“Working with Americans and Europeans has been the best experience in my career. The different Wazungus I’ve worked with have helped me grow at all levels. These treat their house helps like a person employed in an office,” she said.

Margaret revealed that they have not only encouraged her to invest but also offered easy loans.

This enabled her to purchase a two-bedroom house in Nairobi and a piece of land in Kitale where she has built her home.

In addition, she owns several plots in different places and there is one she bought at Ksh170,000 and now selling it at Ksh600,000.

“When the whites see you are doing a good job in their homes, especially when it comes to the handling of children, they treat you well and help you expand your thinking.”

Most of the Europeans she has worked with live in Kenya for a few years before relocating, but they always recommend her to another employer in Nairobi’s suburbs.

“I always make sure that I respect my employers and that’s they even pay school fees for my children, buy me expensive gifts and still communicate long after they leave the country. I also work hard and speak the truth all the time,” she said.

Interestingly, Margaret is still a domestic manager and has a great retirement plan.

“Currently I’m pooling money to be able to build rentals so that when I retire, I will have sources of income in Nairobi and other places,” she disclosed.
