Mlolongo trader charged over fake excise tax stamps

A trader has been charged with three counts relating to counterfeit excise stamps.

Agnes Muthoni Matum, the director of Crywan Enterprises Limited was arraigned at the Milimani Law court to answer to charges of manufacturing of excisable goods without a license, being in possession of excisable goods affixed counterfeit excise stamps and being in possession of counterfeit excise stamps.

According to Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Muthoni was arrested on 28th November 2021 at the Crywan Enterprises Limited factory situated at Athi Business Park in Mlolongo, Machakos County.

Despite the company’s license having been suspended for other tax malpractices, KRA says it was found to be in operation and over 200 products affixed with counterfeit excise stamps were found alongside 90 pieces of counterfeit excise stamps.

Muthoni denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Hon. Wendy Kagendo and was released on a bond of KShs. 200,000.

The case will be mentioned on 19th January 2022 for pre-trial directions.
