The mother of one of the Kamiti Maximum Prison escapees who were arrested in Kitui on Thursday, November 18, has come out to reveal how her son ditched schooling to join Al Shabaab, a terrorist group.

Zuwena Hamisi, a mother to one Musharaf Abdalla alias Alex Shikanda, narrated that her son was a staunch doctrinaire and a well-behaved kid.

She detailed that she raised her son at Bomanyi Village in Mumias and he studied up to class five and was forced to drop out when he lost his father and the family was unable to raise school fees for him to continue with education.

The table turned when one day Musharaf Abdalla escaped from home and after an intensive search, he was found after three months with an explanation that he had gone to pursue Islamic education in Kilifi County. He was aged 14 at that time.

“Musharaf was learning religion, he came back and joined a local school here in Mumias before he fled home,” she stated.

According to his mother, he learned of Musharaf’s whereabouts after he was arrested on September 30, 2012, in the company of other terrorists who had plans to conduct a terror attack at Parliament Buildings as they were nabbed with firearms, ammunition, and explosives.

Musharaf was later charged and was sentenced to 22 years in prison. His mother is optimistic that he will see her son someday as she pleaded with the government to forgive the trio for escaping from the highly guarded Kamiti Prison.

“I pray that God gives him patience regarding what he did, I also hope that the government will help him and even forgive him for what he did,” she pleaded.

On the other hand, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i stated that the three escapees will be charged afresh for escaping prison.
