Mwingi West Member of Parliament Charles Ngusya Nguna alias CNN has backed Sports Cabinet Secretary Dr Amina Mohamed following her rejoinder to FIFA two days after the world governing football body suspended Kenya indefinitely from all football activities over government interference.
Nguna who is also a member of Parliamentary Sports Committee said there’s need for Gianni Infantino led outfit to allow for independence of member countries to exercise their own sovereign mandate in cleaning up rot and restore order in their respective football governance.
“Local sports especially football operations are sometimes supported by Sports Fund which is majorly tax payers money hence FIFA should allow the government to tame financial impropriety by the federations in a bid to ensure prudent use of resources allocated to them especially during major competitions like AFCON,World Cup qualifiers among others” he said.
The soft spoken lawmaker who staged a mouth watering performance last year in December to collect a total of four gold medals at the East Africa Inter-Parliamentary games in Arusha,Tanzania rallied behind CS Amina saying she has done her best despite lack of enough support from local stakeholders of the sport.
His sentiments come a few weeks after National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) reiterated their commitment through lauding the minister for embracing Kenyan sports fraternity in a very dynamic and pragmatic manner ahead of Commonwealth Games scheduled for July 28 to August 8.
“CS Amina inherited a badly run office and since taking over we can say it’s been a smooth sailing. Tokyo Olympics went well amid covid-19 pandemic and Kenya reclaimed WRC status under her watch. The main challenge has been construction of enough stadia as promised by the ruling administration and we hope before elections something would have done on the same” he added.
Earlier this year the CS met federation representatives and assured them of support from the government and directed that all the training programs and qualification competitions start immediately.
She further asked NOCK officials to draw from the lessons of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to ensure they build on the good performance areas and drastically improve on any areas the country may have had challenges or management gaps a few months before the upcoming global competitions.
