President Uhuru Kenyatta was compelled to cheer up lawmakers from the National Assembly and the Senate during his State of The Nation speech.
During his second-last address in Parliament, the President noticed that the MPs were getting fatigued and cleverly decided to win back their attention.
The Head of State acknowledged that the written speech was too detailed and he was also getting tired.
“(Bear with me), I’m trying avoid reading some parts. I’m also tired,” he said, leaving the MPs in stitches.
The speech took more than two hours to be read out.
Some legislators, especially those allied to Deputy President William Ruto, criticised the Head of State, saying his address should have been summarised.
Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, who was following the proceeding from his home like most Kenyans, said the speech was clumsy.
“Parliament should pass law to set the maximum time that future Presidents will take in the State of the Nation Address. Like Winston Churchill said ‘a good speech should be like woman’s skirt ….’,” he said.
For his part, former National Assembly Majority Leader and Garissa Township MP Aden Duale said the speech was a “big miss”.
Besides being long, Duale claimed that the President did not address the issues that the Constitution demands for the annual function.
“Everybody was tired and you could see it. The President failed to tell us about national values. Instead, he focused on his legacy, which we cannot see. He should have said why his government is disobeying court orders and abducting people right, left, centre,” he said.
