Deputy President William Ruto received a cold reception in Kieni, Nyeri county, where he was scheduled to attend a church service this morning.

The DP’s convoy was forced to speed off as it headed to Mbiriri Full Gospel Church.

Tens of residents were standing on the roadside and did not want anything to with the second in command.

They declared their unwavering support for President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Uhuru! Uhuru! Uhuru! Kwenda kabisa (leave this place) …Mwizi! Mwizi! Mwizi! (Thief! Thief! Thief!),” the locals chanted.

Since yesterday, there has been tension about the DP’s functions in Kieni today.

It started when two churches where Dr. Ruto and his allies had been invited pulled the plug last evening.

Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua and other organisers were compelled to look for another church that could host the DP.

Gachagua accused area MP Kanini Kega of using State machinery to stop the Deputy President’s tour in his constituency.

When it emerged that the DP and his troop had secured an invitation at Mbiriri Full Gospel Church, several roads leading to the worship place were barricaded.

However, supporters of the DP managed to have their way into the church.

It did not take before a rival group arrived, causing chaos.

Police were forced to intervene and arrest some people.

Earlier in the day, Gacahagua was secretly recorded on camera having a phone call with someone who is arguably one of his mobilisers, according to the conversation.

He warned the person against making blunders that would lead to humiliation.

“Do your work properly. We are on our way,” he said.

The Kieni MP has denied having a role in the fracas.
