A British family has been thrown out on the streets on February 4 after eviction from their Farmlane residence in Karen.
Based on media reports, the family of Adrianne and Carolyne Radcliffe were involved in a property broil with a Nairobi-based lawyer who claimed that he owned the property.
The family stated that their property was auctioned illegally, as they had cleared all rental arrears for the past 33 years that they have been living there.
Speaking to Citizen TV, Carolyne said that the auctioneers were boorish and even injured her during the eviction process.
“They forced their way into their house. They were very rough with me, and I have scars to show for it. They told us to secure our belonging, but they gave us no time to do this,” she said.
Further, she said that they lost valuable property owing to theft.
“A lot of things have been stolen including small items which entered people’s pockets and valuable stuff but also what our neighbours told us is that people have been walking off down the road with other things. There’s a lot of criminality associated with what’s happened here.”
On his part, Adrianne narrated that they bought the property through the same lawyer who claimed ownership from a friend who had died a few years ago. He says that the lawyer is their friend but had betrayed them in a move to get the property.
He added that the lawyer had acquired a court order, seeking to drive them out from their home.
One of the auctioneers, David Kisavuli, said that the family had failed to pay rent since 2014 and they followed the due process before giving them the bum’s rush.
“The court order was for eviction, which was issued by Milimani law courts, was approved by county commander, OCPD, and OCS. The execution of the court order was supervised by Deputy OCS of Karen,” he stated.
Lang’ata Sub County Police Commander Benjamin Mwathi confirmed that the auctioneers had followed the required procedure as per the law.
