President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, 1st December conferred a City status to Nakuru making the Central Rift town Kenya’s fourth City.

The Head of State signed and handed over the Instruments of City Conferment to Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui at the rehabilitated Nyayo Gardens.

“The City of Nakuru shall therefore have all the powers, authority, rank and privileges of a city under the laws of Kenya. It shall have all the rights duties and standings of a City provided under the Urban Areas and Cities Act,” said President Kenyatta.

Ahead of the conferment exercise attended by several national leaders among them former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the President inaugurated the new Nakuru Disaster Management Centre as well as the rehabilitated Nyayo Gardens.

Nakuru now joins Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa as Kenya’s cities and will be known as the City of Nakuru. It is the first city to be awarded a charter under the 2020 Constitution.

As a city, Nakuru will enjoy more funding from the National Government.
