National, county governments sign MOU on affordable housing – KBC

The government has signed a memoranda of understanding with county governments for affordable housing projects.

The State Department of Housing says the MOU requires that developers building on land provided for free by the Kenyan government, for the purposes of affordable housing projects will be required to design and construct their buildings according to the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies, EDGE standard.

This is in a bid to tackle climate change effects including droughts and floods which continue to ravage the country.

EDGE which was created in response to the need for a measurable solution to prove the financial case for building green and help jumpstart the mainstreaming of green buildings, ensures 20 percent less energy, less water and less embodied energy in materials compared to a base case building.

The Department said Kenya has joined other nations in affirmation of global commitments by ratifying climate action agreements and further domesticating the same in national laws and strategies to ensure there is action at all levels of government.
