The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has announced changes in its leadership, and Nelson Havi has been replaced by Linda Kiome, the chair of Mt Kenya Branch Caucus, as the President of LSK.

This follows an announcement by Havi in 2021 that he would be focusing much on politics this year, as he is vying for Westland’s parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Elections.

The new President is set to take over full Havi’s responsibilities until the term of the current leadership lapses.

Late last year, troubled LSK CEO Mercy Wambua had moved to the High Court to seek her reinstatement following a compulsory leave issued by Havi’s team. Luckily, the Court defended her ouster and stated that she was legally in office.

The Court further directed LSK to convene a special meeting within 21 days to chart a way of resolving the contentions that had crippled its operations, failure to which the branch chairs will take over the leadership of the Society.

“If council remains dysfunctional and not able to conduct business, the Chairs Caucus shall take over the functions of the council with the Chair of the Branch exercising powers of the president of LSK for the remainder of the term,” Justice Mrima ordered.

However, LSK was unable to convene the meeting as directed by the Court.

“In our meeting today (January 11), we received confirmation from the LSK Secretariat that the Council has been unable to convene a meeting in compliance with the directions given by the Court. In default thereof and pursuant to the said decision, the Branch Chairs Caucus has with effect from the 11th, January 2022, taken charge of the role of the Council for the remainder of the term of the Council.” LSK branch chair caucus announced.

The new leaders of LSK noted that Justice Mrima’s directives will be taken into account, and Havi’s team should not, in any way, interfere with the operations of the Society.

Here is the new LSK team of leaders after its restructuring.

1. Linda Kiome ( Mt. Kenya Branch, Caucus Chair )

2. Mathew Nyabena ( Coast Branch, Caucus Vice-Chair )

3. Justus Mutia ( South Eastern Branch, Caucus Secretary )

4. Eric Theuri ( Nairobi Branch, Caucus Treasurer )

5. Sussy Rautto ( West Kenya Branch, Caucus Deputy Secretary )

6. Henry Kenei ( North Rift Branch, Caucus Deputy Treasurer )
