The government has banned the use of mobile phones in examination centers in the wake of growing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination malpractices.
The ministry of education has prohibited the use of cell phones in examination centers in an effort to curb cases of exam malpractice in the country.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha disclosed that the decision to bar the communication devices was arrived at after it emerged that in the first week of the 2021 KCSE exams at least 20 center managers were arrested in connection with cheating.
“Keep your phones at work. You can go and use them there. If there is any phone we see in school from Monday, that phone shall be confiscated until the end of the examination,” he warned
The announcement comes just four days after the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education National examinations kicked off countrywide.
Speaking while on an inspection tour of the ongoing construction of Competency-Based Curriculum classrooms in Kiambu County, Prof Magoha reiterated that, indeed, no candidate or invigilator shall be allowed to enter any examination center with their mobile phones.
According to Magoha’s directive, only examination station managers and the security officers manning the station will be allowed to have their cell phones.
Meanwhile, Magoha has assured the country that the construction of CBC classrooms was right on target to be used by the first class of CBC students throughout the country.
