Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has called for the immediate reduction of fuel prices.

In a statement, the former Prime Minister said that the increase in fuel cost is a burden to already struggling Kenyans.

“Kenyans who have been struggling to put food on the table since the onset of the pandemic now stand to have their collective plight worsened by the increased fuel prices,” Raila said in a tweet.

“The prices should be lowered immediately to cushion the ordinary wananchi.”

Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has also opposed the increase urging the government to find innovative ways to raise taxes.

Through a statement on Thursday, 16th September Atwoli called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to come out and explain the move by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to increase pump prices.

“We would like Uhuru to comment and make a statement on this unfair perpetual increase in fuel prices. Unless their policies place Kenyan workers at the center then they should prepare for unrest from all quarters,” said Atwoli.

“At the same time, we would like to remind Uhuru that Kenyan workers are suffering and that he should not tolerate the impunity, punishment, and the affront towards Kenyan workers by bodies such as EPRA.”

EPRA on Tuesday, 14th September announced new fuel prices whereby super petrol, diesel and kerosene increased by Ksh7.58, Ksh7.94 and Ksh12.97 per litre, respectively.

The rise is as a result of increased taxes on all the three products notably VAT, which has gone up to 9.98 per cent on petrol from eight per cent.
