The six police officers accused of murdering the Embu brothers on Sunday night, August 1, have maintained that Benson Njiru and Emmanuel Mutura killed themselves by jumping out of a moving vehicle.

In a case filed under the certificate of urgency, the suspects want the bodies of the two exhumed.

The six; Martin Wanyama, Lilian Cherono, James Mwaniki, Benson Mbuthia, Consolata Kariuki, and Nicholas Cheruiyot want an inquest carried out first before the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) prefers any charges against them.

Through lawyer Danstan Omari, the fired officers said they did not have a representative during the postmortem conducted on the bodies of the victims.

The autopsy revealed that the siblings died from blunt force trauma caused by head and ribs injuries.

“When postmortem on the cause of death of the two deceased brothers was done, the petitioners chosen pathologists were not present,” Omari said.

The suspects claimed that they did not have a hand in the deaths of Njiru and Mutura, as the two died from a suicidal act.

They said on the fateful they arrested 10 for disregarding the curfew, but when they reached the Manyatta police station they realised the brothers had escaped.

However, their account contradicted that of witnesses who stated that the victims were hit with a baton on the head until they passed away.

The officers also want the court to issue an order compelling the return of their confiscated mobile phones so that they can send money to their families and lawyers.

The matter will be mentioned on Tuesday next week.

They have already been subjected to mental assessment at the Mathari Hospital and declared fit to stand.

The Independent Policing Authority (IPOA) positively linked the six to the murder of the two university students.
