Orie Rogo Manduli Was a Beauty And Drama Queen Who Loved Controversy

The life of a politician, farmer, and businesswoman Orie Rogo Manduli cannot fit any description, but all we can is that she was a woman who dared and disturbed the status quo.

Manduli breathed her last this afternoon, 8th September, at her residence in the plush Riverside, Nairobi, according to her family.

The 73-year-old was born in Kisumu. Her parents were teachers and as fate would have it, she did a course in teaching. However, she never set foot in a classroom to teach.

He was first introduced to the world at the age of 16, when she was crowned Miss World Kenya.

At that young age, she met actor and film star Oliver Litondo and they settled down. However, the union ended three years later. At an early age, Manduli was a mother of three daughters and a divorcee.

Later, she met Meshack Manduli from one of Zambia’s royal families in the Lunda community, and she remarried. They were blessed with a son, Katyana. Meshack died in 2003.

In a nutshell, Manduli was a woman of many firsts.

She became the first woman to participate in the East African Safari Rally in 1974 and had another try in 1975.

The businesswoman was also the first female chair of the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Council. However, her term ended unceremoniously in 2005 after leadership wrangles.

At some point in her life, she was a journalist with the Voice of Kenya, later known as the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

She also vied for a political seat but failed.

The mother of four craved media attention and when she showed up, her presence could not go unnoticed.

Her trademark was elegant Nigerian-inspired African dresses and to complete the look was her massive headscarf. She was, indeed, a real queen.

Controversy

Manduli did not mince her words. She always hit the nail on the head.

For instance, she was not happy with the direction many young girls were taking. She blamed the lack of role models and described the girls as “rogue”.

“Role models for young girls are not there anymore. They are following the so-called socialites, who are nothing but high-end prostitutes,” she told Citizen TV during an interview in March 2018.

Additionally, she did not like unmarried leaders. She argued one should provide leadership at the family level before leading the public.

Further, the former beauty queen did not understand women who refused to have children. In an interview with the Standard, she said it is okay for a woman not to get married, but staying childless was “wrong”.

“Children are the reason we work so hard, besides being our future generation and the one who will help us in old age. You cannot send your cat or dog to run errands, can you?” she posed.

She admitted that she harassed her children to give her grandkids.
