Police Arrest Contractor of Collapsed Building in Kisumu

Police in Kisumu have arrested the contractor of the two-storey building that collapsed on Monday 13th September in Mamboleo estate killing three people.

The three who were identified as Victor Odhiambo aged 29, Florence Odhiambo, 25, and Beatrice Awuor aged 30 were retrieved on Monday evening and their bodies were moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

The 1:30 pm tragedy left seven people injured, and several others trapped under the rubble.

Gilbert Aono, the contractor of the building was arrested on Monday evening and locked up at Kondele police station and he is set to be arraigned today.

The owner of the building is still in hiding as police continue searching for him.

According to the National Construction Authority (NCA), the collapsed building was inspected twice and activities at the site stopped in May 2021 over safety concerns.

The owner however continued with construction works behind the authority’s back.

The incident comes barely one week after a five-storey building partially collapsed in Kinoo, Kiambu County.

The five-storey building was on Monday, 6th September safely demolished under the supervision of engineers from NCA and officers from the county government.

Another five-storey building collapsed in Gachie in Kiambu county, killing three workers.

The tragedy occurred at around 3:45 pm on Monday, 30th August, when construction workers were putting up the sixth floor of the building.

More than 10 people, including construction workers, who were trapped in the debris, were rescued.
