When an advertisement went around on social media platforms that a popular Mombasa church was looking for a camera operator, to many people it looked like a joke.
Not because Jesus Celebration Church (JCC) is hiring, but because of the requirements needed for those interested.
Apart from possessing the technical skills to take good pictures and videos, the successful candidate must have one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
In the advert, it is indicated that the applicants will have to demonstrate they can speak in tongues.
“Born again Christian, spirit-filled with an evidence of speaking in tongues,” it reads.
Other requirements include the ability to rig and operate a range of camera equipment for high complexity multi-camera production.
“Having discerning and educated eye, a proven interest and knowledge of photography and broadcast picture composition. Video editing experience will be an added advantage.”
As to why the church wants a camera person who can speak in tongues, it was not explained.
Also, it is not clear how applicants will prove that they are filled with the Holy Spirit.
Here are some reactions from Kenyans:
Law Okwudike: “So speaking in tongues is a criterion do God’s work? That tells a lot about the church.”
Atsango Henry: “The pastor should be able to discern,
otherwise, even devil agents speak in tongues too.”
Fromence Chapa: “Tongues is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit, which does not come to every servant. This has been used to fake prayers and prophecies.”
Jeff Kibat: “Next time they will need ushers who were born and bred in Jerusalem.”
Dominic Sila: “These are the churches that make you feel you want to pray at home.”
Ama Ampofowaa: “What have tongues got to do with working with a camera? Who even discovered Africa?”
Nambuye Rose: “When everybody starts speaking in tongues, who will control the camera?”
