A popular restaurant in Westlands, Nairobi stands out amongst its competitors due to its breathtaking approach in proving that disability is not inability.
Ayira’s Cafe has become renowned for hiring members of staff diagnosed with neuro-diverse challenges. The distinguished eatery consists of a colourful ambience but it is mainly lauded for its efforts to ensure equality.
Waitresses in orange T-shirts and black aprons stand next to a table in the middle of the Cafe. The owner, Diana Ayoo, noted that her inspiration was derived from her daughter who was born with several neural disabilities.

She noted that she sought to enable a means whereby the less fortunate and disabled can still earn a living.
“I got the inspiration to start this business so that I can set base for her when she becomes an adult for the society to be able to start employing these people,” Ayoo stated.
In order to educate patrons about the different neural disabilities, the restaurant has various books on display.
Further, Ayoo noted that the hotel will soon establish a phone tablet where customers can write their orders which will automatically be translated to the chefs’ counter.
The employees noted that the restaurant makes her feel welcomed into the society as they are not looked down upon.
Various business establishments in the country adopt certain measures to ensure equality for all Kenyans. Recently, a matatu crew was lauded for sparing their time to pick people living with disabilities from their workplace.
The crew from KMO Sacco also take them home at no extra cost as opposed to the normal charges whereby the rates for the PLWDs are tripled.
