Pre-primary, primary, secondary schools to open in January 2021

Schools Reopening in Kenya 2021: The Ministry of Education has cancelled the academic year for pre-primary, primary and secondary schools. Now, these classes will open in January 2021.

The ministry has also announced the cancellation of the 2020 KCPE and KCSE examinations.

Upon reopening of the schools, learners will remain in their current 2020 classes. According to Education cabinet secretary George Magoha, KCPE and KCSE candidates for 2020 will sit their exams later next year while the school calendar of this year will be considered lost due to COVID-19.

“In consultation with Ministry of Health we have agreed schools to reopen when daily COVID-19 cases reduce consistently for 14 days. Social and physical distancing is the most critical factor in ensuring safety of learners,” said CS Magoha. “”Inter-county movement of students will cause severe challenges with high incidents of infections. We are happy to inform Kenyans that the president accepted the recommendations. Based on this disturbing trend of COVID-19 cases rising steadily, Education stakeholders have shelved the initial proposal to reopen schools in September for Class 8 and Form 4 learners.”

Magoha was speaking on Tuesday at KICD Nairobi accompanied by Education stakeholders. He said the universities will only reopen only when they meet the requirements. “Members of the senate and faculty must agree how they are going to do a phased reopening,” he said. Schools Reopening in Kenya 2021.
