Prof Kiama in trouble after ‘If you are poor go to KU’ remarks

The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Prof Stephen Kiama is on a frying pan again after he was allegedly quoted bad mouthing his critics.

Prof Kiama has been on the crossfire afte the UoN implemented new charges, Undergraduate annual tuition and administrative fees have been increased from Sh28,500 to Sh59,000 for the government-sponsored students, sparking protests from the students’ council.

Some students claim that whenever they sort to inquire from the Vice-chancellor professor Stephen Kiama as to why the increment, the VC  would cheekily respond to them.

“If you don’t have money, study in TVETS. The same way with alcohol, if you can’t afford Hennessy, you buy chrome or Gilbey’s, Bora ulewe or If you can’t afford UoN go to KU or Moi.”

According to a number of students and parents, fees in the institution have been increased up to over 120%. This has sparked a huge debate prompting protest from both parents and students.

Students in single rooms, mostly those in third and final years will pay Sh21,525 per semester up from Sh3,150 followed while those in rooms shared by four will pay Sh15,120, up from Sh2,730.

Fresh students who started reporting to the public university from Monday 20th September 2021 will pay Sh19,635 for a room shared by two students per semester up from the Sh2,835 that UoN has been charging at its main campus.

However, the VC has defended himself saying the institution has followed all the necessary procedures in increasing the fee owing to the expansion of many activities in the university.

A man calling himself a professor, he is very stupid and maybe he bought his papers from river road. Even his parents knows very well he is a Dada head

How arrogant can this man be? UON is not a private institution but supported with public taxes paid by Kenyans just like KU, Moi and others, so you are not special in any way. Government should take control of this institution otherwise this man will ruin our Almata and mess with the recognition of the institution globally.

This clearly says that students from poor background are discouraged from applying to study at UON.

That’s an arrogant response to the needy student of a struggling parent. Too unfortunate to for the VC

If he has not stolen enough money to be rich , this is not the time. Putting barriers to poor bright students to attain university education is evil. He should resign, establish his own private university and charge whatever amount he wishes. Shame on him. But again, he could just be a mouthpiece of some academic goons.
