Lung’anyiro based and last year’s runners up Quills FC are the Champions of the fourth edition of Akwata Memorial Cup finals staged on Boxing day at Munami primary grounds in Matungu constituency, Kakamega county.
The fast rising side beat hosts and defending champions Munami FC 5-4 on penalty shootouts in an entertaining match that had ended in a stalemate during regulation time.
Quills FC head coach Louis Wangila Nyukuri attributed his team’s victory to proper tactical strategy.
“We knew how high the stakes were. This is an opponent we know very because we share the same administrative area.We have clashed 4 times in the space of one year and we had only one victory to show.
“I asked my players to make Bockins and Gibson as uncomfortable as possible on the ball because those two are the engines of Munami FC.The plan worked well and going into the penalties it was anyone’s game but luck was on our side” he confidently stated.
Munami tactician Chrispinus Nyangweso on his part said they have shifted their focus to the ongoing Cleo Malala tournament where they seek to win the title and take home prize money of Kshs 1.5M during the finals set for new year eve.

“We played well but our opponents were equally at their best and they did what they could to win the game.We have put the woes of our defeat behind and now our concentration is Senator Cleophas Malala tournament where we want to surpass last year’s performance and get into the finals and possibly win the cup” noted Coach Marietso
Tournament sponsor Godfrey Akwata said the competition would be big next year as he intends to invite both legends of Harambee Stars and current players of the national team to play in a friendly match that would curtain raise the finals.
The organising committee led by Zedekiah ‘Zed’ Nasubo are also working on expansion of the territory of teams taking part and also reach out those who mean well for the growth of football in the area in a bid to raise the figure of cash prizes to both winners and participating teams.

“I know 2022 being an Election year our politicians will be funding several tournaments but as for us we’ll maintain our format of giving back to the society while expecting nothing in return.I intend to invite legends of the national team like Boniface Ambani,Simon Mulama,Nicholas Muyoti to play against current crop such as Clifton Miheso,Eugene Asike,Eric Marcelo among others.
“This would be big as big guns would ultimately provide mentorship role to our upcoming stars in a bid to help these young individuals develop their consulting skills, as well as develop professional attitudes and values about important issues such as ethical practice” affirmed Akwata.
Munami is an area traditionally well known for football having been the venue of charged inter-club football competitions for years.Besides, the region has produced elite footballers who have represented both National Super League [NSL] and Kenya Premier League [KPL] clubs.
