The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared Azimio la Umoja One Kenya flag bearer Raila Odinga has to contest for presidency in the 9th August General Elections.
Odinga who was accompanied by his running mate, Martha Karua on Sunday 6th June 2022, presented their credentials before the IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati at the Bomas of Kenya before they were handed a certificate.
Speaking after being cleared the former Prime Minister expressed confidence that the IEBC will conduct free and fair elections.
He promised that his camp members will conduct themselves appropriately during the election period.
“We have confidence that the IEBC has got the capacity to conduct free and fair elections. We urge you to live by the expectations of the people of Kenya,” he stated.
“We promise you that we are going to conduct ourselves as candidates and members of our movement as per the constitution of Kenya. We want to see free and fair elections, we want to see Kenyans expressing themselves freely in August general polls.”Raila and Karua were accompanied by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, Charity Ngilu (Kitui Governor), Junnet Mohamed (Suna East MP), Timothy Bosire (ODM Treasurer), Edwin Sifuna (ODM SG), Sabina Chege (Muranga MP), Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o (Governor Kisumu), John Waluke (Sirisia MP), Ann Kananu (Governor Nairobi), Maina Kamanda (nominated MP), Esther Passaris (Nairobi Woman rep) and Governor Nderitu Muriithi (Laikipia). Also in attendance were, Ms Karua’s parents Jackson and Josephine.
Raila now becomes the fifth political party Presidential candidate to be cleared by IEBC after Walter Mong’are (Umoja Summit Party), Prof George Wajackoyah (Roots Party), David Mwaure Waihiga (Agano Party), William Ruto (United Democratic Alliance).
