Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has condemned the inflammatory remarks that Meru Senator Mithika Linturi made during a political rally organized by Deputy President William Ruto in Eldoret on Saturday, 8th January.

Speaking at St John’s ACK Church Mwimuto in Kabete, Kiambu County on Sunday, 9th January, Raila said Linturi’s ‘madoadoa’ remarks threatened to tear the country apart.

“If someone speaks in a language aimed at inciting Kenyans, we know it right away. Yesterday in Eldoret, we heard the talk about ‘Madoadoa’…I am here to answer them, we won’t allow that,” said Raila.

He further said that no one should intimidate anyone anywhere because Kenya is for all Kenyans.

”Every Kenyan has a right to live anywhere in our country. They don’t need to seek permission from anyone. A Luhya has a right to live in Nyeri, Kikuyu has a right to live in Eldoret a Kamba in Turkana and Kalenjin in Lamu,” he added.

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka who has also castigated Linturi’s remarks challenged political leaders to be careful with their utterances.

He warned that reckless utterances attributed to politicians can easily cause instability in the country.

“This talk about ‘madoadoa’ reminds me of Kiambaa church (in Eldoret) where women and children were thrown into the fire. That is not the country we really want to lead,” the Wiper Democratic Movement leader said during a church service in AIC Ziwani.

“We need to repent over Kiambaa. There are people still sitting on other people’s lands and we pretend everything is okay. That’s my challenge today. This nation must repent and people stop beating war drums again, and we will be able to move.”

Linturi has since been arrested over his remarks and he will be arraigned on Monday, 10th January and charged with hate speech.
