Prominent Kenyan paleoanthropologist and former Head of Public Service Dr Richard Leakey has been laid to rest.
According to a statement issued on Monday, 3rd January the family said Dr Leakey was buried on Monday afternoon at his favorite ridge in the Rift Valley.
“In keeping with Richard’s wishes, we, this afternoon, interred his body at a place of his choosing, on his favourite ridge overlooking the majestic Rift Valley that he so loved,” Samira Leakey said on behalf of the family.
Due to Covid-19 containment protocols, the family asked for privacy from the members of the public as they mourn their loved one.
“As we struggle to come to terms with our loss, we are respectfully asking for a few moments of privacy so that we can mourn as a family before we celebrate his extraordinary life as a son of Kenya,” said the family.
“We are also conscious of the Covid19 protocol rules that have been advised by our national health authorities and so at this time, given the vulnerability of Richard’s widow Meave, we will not be allowing any visits to the home. The family also requests no flowers.”
However, arrangements have been made to have a condolence book at the offices of the National Museum and the KWS, where anyone wishing to express their condolences can visit.
Tributes commemorating Richard can also be left online on the ForeverMissed memorial site.
Dr Leakey, a globally celebrated paleoanthropologist and conservationist passed away on Sunday, 2nd Sunday at the age of 77.
He has over the years served the country in several public service roles among them as director of the National Museums of Kenya and chairman of the Kenya Wildlife Service Board of Directors.
