Residents of Nyando through the Anglican Church thank LWITU women living in the United States

KDRTV-The people of Nyando Sub-County in Kisumu, have thanked the Luo Women Association based in the United States for supporting them in this difficult period of floods which have ravaged their area since the onset of heavy rains 2 months ago.

River Nyando which has perennially burst its banks in rainy season making roads impassable is currently flooded.

During heavy downpour many homes are always swept away in the raging floods and property worth millions of shillings is destroyed in the aftermath forcing residents to seek refuge on higher grounds.

The County and National government is yet to come up with a solution to this problem. Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o in collaboration with the National government is planning to build dykes as a permanent solution to this perennial problem.

Recently the Cabinet secretary for Devolution Mr. Eugene Wamalwa paid a courtesy call to Governor Nyong’o and said that plans are at an advanced stage to build a 4 Kilometer dyke along the river to mitigate the floods during the heavy downpour.

A 50 year old man was swept by the raging floods and killed in the process while two more people died while they tried to cross the swollen river in February of this year.

And in Nyamasaria area at the outskirts of Kisumu City a sand excavator lost control and killed the operator while trying to clear sand collected along the river bank.

The Association in collaboration with the Anglican Church in Kisumu were able to distribute food stuff worth over Kshs.300, 000 to 11 different camps.

The group has currently been able to feed 11 camps, they provided breakfast in the first two camps namely Kowala and in Lela.

They distributed maize, beans, Dagaa or Omena as it is locally called, sweet potatoes, bread, milk, sugar, tea leaves, and salt.

The Luo Women in USA or commonly referred by an acronym LWITU (Luo Women in the United States) officials are  Dr. Lorna Were, Hilda Juma, Meg Odanga, Lillian Onyango, Judith Magambo, Peres Jacoby, Alice Kiaye, Tish Obel, Liz Ombija and Olga Ochola.

The Association is calling upon all Kenyans and well-wishers to join hands with them to feed the less privileged in the society and during calamities like floods and landslides.
