New details have emerged that the late Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza succumbed to Covid-19 and not a heart attack as earlier reported.
According to Burundi government reports, the outgoing president sudden death was a result of a heart attack, but diplomatic sources in Bujumbura and Nairobi have confirmed that Pierre died of coronavirus.
“He had coronavirus but no one would say so because the president had played it down all along,” a western diplomat based in Bujumbura revealed.
The First Lady of Burindi Denise Nkurunziza was flawn to Nairobi to seek medical treatment about 11 days ago for a reason that was kept secret.
However, it was later confirmed that she was suffering from Covid-19 and was successfully treated at the Aga Khan University Hospital and went back to Burundi on Tuesday 9 June after receiving the news on husband’s death.
The Burundi government statement also said that the Head of Burundi State attended a game of volleyball on Saturday 6 June but fell sick that night and was rushed to the hospital.
It was also reported that Pierre showed all the coronavirus signs and was struggling to breathe when he was rushed to the hospital.
