Deputy President William Ruto has nominated Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua his runing mate for the August 9th election.
An announcement that was initially supposed to be made on the morning of Saturday 14th May was postponed to Sunday 15th May after 17 hours of intense deliberations, negotiations and lobbying.
And shortly after mid day on Sunday, DP Ruto and his lieutenants emerged from a church service at his Karen residence in Nairobi to unveil Rigathi Gachagua and bring to an end the bruising battle for the running mate.
Senator Kithure Kindiki was however absent, perhaps after coming second to Gachagua in what DP Ruto said were candid, robust engagements informed by reflections and lengthy consultations.
DP Ruto had good words for Gachagua, terming him a fear less man, a fantastic mobilizer and a living example of the real hustler.
DP Ruto has now vowed to sign an executive order if elected President to give clear responsibilities to his Deputy President.
He said his Deputy President will Chair cabinet committees, coordinate intergovernmental meetings with counties, coordinate supervision of development projects among other roles assigned by the President.
He singled out those who made the final shortlist ; MP Ndindi Nyoro, MP Alice Wahome, Governor Ann Waiguru who according to DP Ruto missed it by a whisker, Speaker Justin Muturi as well as Senator Kindiki.
DP Ruto was at hand to give Gachagua his first assignment, to offer leadership to the Kenya Kwanza economic team alongside Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
Kenya Kwanza, will now present its nominee to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission ahead of the Monday 16th May deadline.
