The security withdrawal saga pitting Deputy President William Ruto and the State got uglier today, September 1, when Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i appeared before the National Assembly Security Committee.
Some allies of the DP had complained that removing elite General Service Unit (GSU) officers from the second in command’s homes and replacing them with Administration Police (AP) was a big downgrade.
However. Matiang’i decided to blow up the whole issue by publicly sharing details are that are only available to police bosses.
The Super CS clarified that the DP has a total of 257 security guards, 74 of whom are always by him every minute.
He said although DP Ruto’s official Karen residence, private homes, businesses, and farms have never been gazetted as protected areas, they have been provided with state security.
“Contrary to the allegations made and in view of the evidence we have shown you (members of the Committee), Deputy President is the most guarded in history of the country in comparison with previous equivalent officer holders,” he said.
Matiang’i alluded that the DP was just a cry baby on a sympathy-seeking adventure.
“The problem with our country is that some people suffer from sympathy addiction. They are always looking for opportunities to lament about this and that to attract sympathies,” he said.
Kenyans were shocked to learn that there are police officers who draw government salaries yet their work is only to man the DP’s ranches and poultry farms.
As usual, Kenyans had a filed day on social media, some attacking the country’s number two for adopting the ‘hustler’ tag yet he was nowhere near that and others defending him.
Critics argued that the DP should stop identifying himself with the common man because he was not ordinary by any standard.
However, Tangatanga online battalion has questioned Matiang’i motives, asking why he can’t talk about the military men who guard the late President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s grave in Parliament.

Pauline Njoroge: “You mean chicken have been getting GSU protection?”
Gabriel Oduda: “Is your poultry farm guarded by the police? Do you feel your layers would be more productive if they were made to lay eggs at gunpoint? Fell no more. Bring all your chicken to your favourite hustler.”
Dennis Itumbi: “Is there a grave guarded by several military and other officers? Asking for a friend.”
Selvine Rachillo: “It is a pity one person has 257 officers to protect him, his ‘compatriot’ Mama Mboga (vegetable vendor) has none.”
Noordin Abdi: “Why should a dead body be guarded at the expense of Kenyan taxpayer? Can the military defend the body from the punishment of hell in the grave? I doubt.”
