Deputy President William Ruto has openly blasted and disagreed with President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nasa Leader Raila Odinga over the manner in which the Judiciary is handling the recent corruption cases.

While Uhuru and Raila have found fault and repeatedly criticised the Judiciary for giving ridiculous bail terms to corruption suspects, DP Ruto on his part praised the Maraga team and expressed confidence they will diligently deliver on their mandate.

Speaking during the funeral of Prof Abel Mugenda, Thogoto, Kiambu County, DP Ruto said https://youtu.be/DlX6ETf5N-U

This was after the court convicted the first corruption suspect where a former National Youth Service (NYS) official was sentenced to four years with the alternative to pay a Sh4 million fine after he was found guilty of corruption.

Sellesio Karanja was convicted over the loss of Sh47.6 million through fraudulent procurement in the first NYS scandal.

Ruto’s remarks have been in complete contrast with those of President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nasa Leader Raila Odinga and the DPP Noordin Haji who have on separate occasions adversely criticized the Kenyan Judiciary for hampering and slowing down the fight against corruption by giving major suspects “ridiculous” cash bails.

Speaking on Jamhuri Day December 12th 2018 and during the round table interview with journalists in State House Mombasa last Friday, President Uhuru Kenyatta accused the Judiciary of not being as supportive on graft war. He faulted the Kenyan Courts for dampening the Kenyans spirit when they witness suspects released on ridiculously low bail terms, fraud suspects interfering with the legislative processes and using the Court process to delay justice. In his new year message, the president vowed he will not allow individuals charged with corruption offenses to flaunt their ill-gotten wealth. The president promised Kenyans he will enhance the work of Asset Recovery Agency to ensure that they get and use court orders to freeze and confiscate assets and accounts of fraud suspects and called on the Judiciary to up its game in supporting the war against corruption.

Backing the President’s remarks, the Orange Democratic Party Leader Raila Odinga during an exclusive Citizen TV Interview also faulted the Judiciary for undermining the war on corruption by giving unreasonable bail terms to accused people despite incriminating evidence. The NASA Leader said the courts were making the war on graft harder by allowing public officers linked to corruption to resume office while they have pending cases.

On his part, the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji says his team of investigators and prosecutors work so hard to put together cases against corrupt individuals but the whole process are either halted or slowed down by “corrupt judges”.
