ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi’s recent meeting with former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua and Sally Kosgey, a one-time Head of Public Service in late president Daniel Moi’s era was part of the strategy of those surrounding president Uhuru Kenyatta feeling sidelined.
The powerful forces are pushing Mudavadi to succeed Uhuru and are not comfortable with deputy president William Ruto or ODM leader Raila Odinga presidency. The camp that is now called the moderates argues that Mudavadi, unlike Raila, if president, will take time to give them positions as he will rely on them to run the country.
The same group is worried if Ruto is president, they will be sacked the following day once sworn-in. The moderates are at war with hardliners mostly members of the Kenyatta family who believe, even if Mudavadi is backed, he does not have finances to run for presidency although astute leader.
They say in 2013, Mudavadi was funded by Moi family but come 2017, he did not run due to financial troubles forcing him to join Nasa forces.
In fact, Kenyan Digest has established that the current political war between COTU boss Francis Atwoli and Mudavadi is due to the belief that Atwoli can fund Mudavadi presidency and has to be delinked from him in favour of handshake politics.
Those said to have soft spot for Mudavadi in the corridors of power is David Murathe. Just like Peter Kenneth, Murathe is from Gatanga, Murang’a county. The proMudavadi State House operatives see him as a moderate and level minded politician.
They were instrumental in having him accompany Uhuru to officially launch a power project in North Eastern. Kenyan Digest has information that with Uhuru now controlling his succession openly dumping Ruto and with Mudavadi factor outside his mind, the group has started working on plan B as it happened during the Kibaki succession race.
To them, a second force has to be created to accommodate those being haunted out of Nasa and Jubilee. Mudavadi is to play a key role in this scenario. The group has brought on its side faces that handled Raila and Uhuru presidential campaigns to be in-charge of Musalia Mudavadi Centre and rebrand him. Kenneth and Karua have tried their luck on the presidency.
Mudavadi held talks with the Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago, MPs Didmus Barasa, Dan Wanyama, John Waluke and Senator Kimani Wamatangi. Informed sources reveal that the second alliance being formed will accommodate Ruto allies and the timing is on board.
Also being roped in are members of civil society with Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana the link. Already, plans to form an operational secretariat to work on modalities are on. Under the banner “National Interest Movement”, the movement also eyes religious leaders, non-governmental organizations, politicians and professionals.
Governor Kibwana is also to engage second term governors, senators and politicians. Notable faces in the power game are David Ndii, Maina Kiai and John Githongo. A number of Kalenjin tycoons are being reached to join the movement with word that Jimmy Wanjigi who has fallen out with ODM leader Raila is behind the deal.
