Security forces have launched an extensive and sustained security operation in Widho Shopping Centre, Lamu, on Monday, January 4, 2021.
The manhunt targets criminals who laid an ambush against villagers during which six people were killed, among them a village elder identified as Joseph Mwangi. He was stabbed several times in the stomach by the criminals before finally beheading him.
According to police reports filed at Kibaoni police station, the house of Mr. Mwangi was burnt down after his extermination.
Another body of a local, Francis Kamua, was found along a road within the shopping center after being reported missing for days. His body had gunshot wounds in the head, and its examination by police indicated that he was tortured before being killed.
“Francis Kamua had mysteriously disappeared on 2/1/2022. His body was found along the road within Widho Shopping Centre and had head gunshot wounds”
Lamu County Commissioner Samson Macharia confirmed the reports adding that they are yet to identify the raiders who ensnared the village on Monday at 4 am. However, he pointed out that they suspect that the series of heinous attacks, on males, in the village is linked to Somali-based Al-Shabaab militants.
“We are combing the nearby forest to apprehend the culprit and have them prosecuted. We suspect that this is a terror attack carried a gang that disappeared in the forest,” said Macharia.
The reason why the police suspect the Al-Shabaab militants is because of the similarities in the way they carry out the assault. In the 2014 and 2015, Mpeketoni and Hindi attacks, the sectarians tied the hand of their victims in the back before they slit their throats. They also targeted only males, similar to the recent blitz.
“One of the four male bodies burnt beyond recognition were suspected to be those of the Mangwe den owner John Murimi and his three casuals, Peter Musyoka, Maina Wanjege, and peter Maina.
All the deceased persons had their hands tied from behind. Also, several houses were torched within the locality, and property of unknown value was burnt.
Bodies have been moved to Mpeketoni sub-county hospital morgue pending identification and autopsy.” Says the police report.
Lamu leaders led by Mr. Hassan Albeity have condemned the attack and asked the villagers to cooperate with the police so that the attackers can be brought to book.
“We are saddened by this attack. It is the responsibility of us, as Lamu people, to help the security team to get these attackers,” said Albeity.
