President Uhuru Kenyatta’s most aide-de-camp (ADC) has amazed Kenyans after doing the unexpected while in Kasarani Stadium on Saturday, September 18.
Unmistakably, Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Stelu was in the stadium for official duties. He had accompanied his boss, who showed up to cheer team Kenya during the Keino Classic-World Athletics Continental Tour 2021.
When the time for the 100m race came, every Kenyan rose from their seats to glee at fast-rising splinter Ferdinand Omanyala.
Like everyone else, Stelu had his eyes firmly fixed on Omanyala as he dashed alongside his competitors.
He was cheered on by all Kenyans – those inside the stadium and others on their screens – including the most unexpected person who is known other than Colonel Stelu.
Stelu, who traditionally stands still behind the President just like other ADCs, was spotted jumping and pointing at Omanyala. It was indeed a surreal moment.
This is the first time the Head of State’s most trusted bodyguard did such a thing since his appointment to the key role in 2018.
Omanyala finished in 9.77 seconds, taking the first runner-up position. American Trayvon Brommel won the race.
President Kenyatta congratulated him, as he hugged him.
Despite the disappointment of becoming second, the Kenyan made history by setting a new African record in the contest.
“I have conquered Africa, next I’m going for the Word record. I promise my fans a good show and I’m happy I delivered,” he said.
Justin Gatlin, the American who had been tipped to win the contest, came a distanced third. He, however, admitted that Omanyala is the next big thing in the race.
“He used the hometown support really well. I believe Omanyala will be a force to reckon with,” Gatlin said.
