Ambassador (Rtd) Nicholas Mugo is dead. He was 86.
He was husband to Nominated Senator Beth Mugo. They had been married for 63 years.
The lawmaker, in a statement to newsrooms, revealed her spouse has been ailing for sometime and passed away while under treatment.
“With profound sadness and sorrow, I wish to announce the death of my husband, Amb. Nicholas Mugo, that happened early this morning at the Nairobi Hospital after a long illness,” the senator said.
The career diplomat studied in the United States in the 1950s courtesy of a scholarship programme initiated by the late Cabinet Minister Tom Mboya.
He served as Kenya’s ambassador in various countries including France, Vatican, Yugoslavia and Ethiopia.
“Before attainment of Kenya’s independence, Amb. Mugo was recruited to join the East African Community while still in the United States. He was among the first Kenya Africans who came back to the country to take up the responsibilities of serving the nation,” the lawmaker said.
Amb Mugo will be cremated tomorrow at the Kariakor cemetery in Nairobi.
The family said a memorial will be held at a later date.
