Senator Cherargei links insecurity in region to police

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has asked the government to compensate families who lost relatives through police brutality.

Cherargei said compensation was pivotal since the kins lost their sole breadwinners and were left with no one to fend for them.

Speaking to journalists, the legislator also linked rising cases of insecurity in the county to police officers after revealing that six people had been murdered in the last one month.

He gave the government a two-day ultimatum to solve the insecurity in the region and said failure to which, people would take matters into their hands.

“Killings by police and unknown people is of great concern,” he said.

The latest victim in the wave of murders was Zakayo Kipkinyor who was killed on the night of Sunday, July 12.

The senator was also identified other victims such as Lazarus Tirop, Cornelius Kipkogei, Timothy Kipyego, Kevin Kipchumba and Boniface Kiprotich.

Cherargei called on Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai to ensure the criminals had bee brought to book.

Tirop, who worked as a shoe shiner in the town had stood from his workplace to intervene on a matter in which a police officer had stopped a boda boda operator.

It is alleged that the police officer was asking for a KSh 50 bribe from the boda boda operator after he found him without a face mask.

It was at that point that a commotion ensued between the three with the police officer taking out his gun and shooting the cobbler on the head at close range.
