Meru Senator Mithika Linturi has faced backlash after he made remarks that some leaders and Kenyans have termed as inciteful.
“Watu wa Uasin Gishu musicheze na Kenya, kile nawaomba ni kwamba madoa modoa yale muliyonayo hapa muweze kondo (To the people of Uasin Gishu, do not joke with Kenya; I want you to do away with individuals, who are not following your political direction),” he said.
The lawmaker spoke during a mega rally in Eldoret at Sports Club where Deputy President William Ruto was released blessed by his community to vie for the presidency. Rift Valley leaders, elders, and residents released the second in command and allowed him to advance his campaigns in other parts of the country.
Linturi said Uasin Gishu being the county Dr. Ruto hails from must support the DP to the last man.
“In Mt Kenya region, particularly Meru, we are fully behind Ruto, Uasin Gishu must follow suit,” he said.
Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui said the sentiments were worrying and could trigger violence in the volatile region, which is largely inhabited by virtually all tribes.
“Utterance attributed to Senator Linturi in Eldoret is a serious assault to the peace and harmony to communities in Rift Valley. To profile persons on the basis of political or ethnic orientation is regrettable. We condemn the reckless talk and call for prosecution of the senator,” the county boss said.
For his part, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria asked the DP to rebuke the parliamentarian if he is serious about uniting the country.
The Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) party leader claimed Linturi’s comments promoted ethnic balkanisation and were dangerous ahead of the coming election.
“I am a close friend of the Deputy President. If you are in Eldoret and near, tell him to condemn this talk. It doesn’t matter whether it is said by Linturi or Oscar Sudi. It matters that it is being said in Eldoret Sports Club, a few kilometres from KAG Church Kiambaa in ‘Burnt’ Forest. Jameni, Madoadoa tena,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
During the 2007-08 post-election violence (PEV) more than 30 women and children were burnt beyond recognition after the Kiambaa KAG church, where they had sought refuge, was set on fire by unknown people.
However, DP Ruto supporters have defended Linturi, arguing he only implored the residents to elect leaders under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) whose ticket the DP will use to make his first attempt at the presidency.
The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji has directed his team to investigate the lawmaker.
