Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has responded to calls by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and surrendered himself to the police on December 27.

While briefing a presser, Kakamega Central Sub-County Police Commander David Kabena confirmed that Malala had handed himself over to the authorities at Kakamega Central Police Station.

Mr. Kabena further asserted that Malala had made apologies to the public, noting that his sentiments were not meant to cause divisions among the diverse political alignments.

“He (Malala) clarified that what he said during the Maragoli Cultural Festival was a political statement and that he does not intend to use violence or incite his followers into chaos during the rally.”

“Malala said he will maintain peace during the rally. He further said that on Friday, during the Bukhungu II event, he will be at Mumias; 32 kilometers away from the convention,” the commander told The Standard.

The NCIC summon came after Malala vowed to obstruct a political rally by ODM leader Raila Odinga and the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) boss Francis Atwoli slated for December 31 at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega County.

Malala had stated that Kakamega was his bedroom, and anyone willing to transverse the county to sell their political agenda should seek permission, an utterance which was told off by NCIC.

“Kenya has no bedrooms and living rooms for any politician, and there is no space for locking out other politicians from any political side from any part of the country,” the NCIC Boss Samuel Kobia said in a statement.

Kobia assured Kenyans that NCIC is designated to hold into account leaders who make remarks aimed at dividing the nation, saying that they will not be allowed to run for a political seat in 2022.
